About the Fellowship Program

Students who become fellows conduct research, connect with mentors, obtain professional development, engage with NOAA professionals and receive financial support. 

There are several benefits to becoming a fellow, including: 

  • Two-year financial support: tuition and a stipend 
  • Annual minimum award: $36k for doctoral students, $25k for master’s students and $12k for undergraduate students 
  • Training in NOAA-mission research and applications 
  • Professional skills development workshops 

Applications are accepted on an on-going basis. The screening process for new applications occurs in March for Fall applicants and November for Spring applicants. Please note that this fellowship requires training and research with deliberate integration of NOAA-mission research focused on Atmospheric Science and Meteorology.  

Requirements

Please note that there are special requirements for this fellowship, including the following: 

 Applicants must major in and have an interest in NOAA mission fields.  

  • Full-time status as an undergraduate or graduate student 
  • Enrolled at one of the 9 NCAS-M II partner institutions 
  • U.S. citizenship 
  • A minimum 3.0 GPA 
  • A major in one of the NOAA mission disciplines in Atmospheric Sciences and Meteorology and/or social, behavioral, or economic (SBE) sciences.  
  • Fulfilling core curriculum requirements of GS-1340  

Successful fellowship recipients must complete at least 24 semester hours (36 quarter hours) in meteorology/atmospheric science to include courses in atmospheric dynamics, synoptic/mesoscale, physical meteorology, remote sensing/instrumentation, and differential equations.  

Additionally, if accepted, graduate students must complete a 12-week graduate internship at a NOAA facility with a NOAA employee. Undergraduate students are highly encouraged to complete a 10-week summer internship at a NOAA facility under the direction of a NOAA mentor.
