We have a variety of ways we do this each year, including sharing information on social media, creating educational videos and producing our podcast called Students, Scientists and Stakeholders.

2024 Alumni Series

The next series is the 2024 Alumni Series. Listeners can learn about the diverse journeys of NCAS-M alumni. This series highlights the stories and experiences of past students, showcasing the benefits and real-life impacts of the NCAS-M program. 

The series is hosted by Dr. Tia C. M. Tyree, a professor in Howard University’s Cathy Hughes School of Communications. She is a longtime member of both the NCAS and NCAS-M grants.

    Podcast host Dr. Tia C. M. Tyree speaks with John Moore, an NCAS-M class of 2010 alum and current Policy Advisor to NOAA’s Deputy Undersecretary for Operations. In this episode, he discusses the beginning of his journey with NOAA as a sophomore meteorology student at Jacksonville State University and the impact the opportunities he has had through the organization have had on his career and work.

    Podcast host Dr. Tia C. M. Tyree speaks with Janae Elkins, a National Weather Service emergency response meteorologist and class of 2018 NCAS-M alum. Janae knew she wanted to be a meteorologist since the age of six, driven by her fascination with severe weather. Her journey from Jacksonville State to the NWS highlights her dedication to helping people understand the weather and take necessary precautions. In this episode, Janae shares her experiences, her role in briefing NWS leadership on significant weather impacts across the United States and offers advice for young people interested in meteorology.

2022 Faculty Series

The next series is the “2022 Fellows Series,” and it offers listeners a chance to hear in-depth stories and experiences from our faculty members. Listeners have the chance to learn how they joined the center, hear details about their research and mentoring efforts and the impact they think NCAS-M has in the STEM industry.

The series is hosted by Dr. Tia C. M. Tyree, a professor in Howard University’s Cathy Hughes School of Communications. She is a longtime member of both the NCAS and NCAS-M grants.

  • Episode 1: Dr. William Stockwell
    Podcast host Dr. Tia C. M. Tyree talks with guest Dr. William Stockwell of the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP). He is a research Professor in the Department of Physics at UTEP and Professor Emeritus at Howard University. He discusses what started his love for science, his most important research projects, mentoring NCAS-M students and the impact of center in the science industry.
  • Episode 2: Dr. Thomas Gill
    Podcast host Dr. Tia C. M. Tyree talks with guest Dr. Thomas Gill of the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP). He is a faculty member in the Department of Geological Sciences and the Environmental Science and Engineering Program. He is the primary instructor for UTEP’s weather and climate science courses, a mentor for meteorology and climatology instructors at minority-serving institutions and an experienced researcher on atmospheric aerosols and the interactions between the land surface and the atmosphere.

    Podcast host Dr. Tia C. M. Tyree talks with guest Dr. Joseph L. Wilkens of Howard University. His research focuses on remote sensing tools and air quality model development. Dr. Wilkins is one of the leading researchers in the fire modeling community, and he is known for sharing his research globally across many government and academic institutions. The overall goal of his research program is to increase BIPOC participation in atmospheric research by creating workforce ready competent programmers and scientists.

With more than 10 years of connections, mentorship and projects, she reflects on how her expertise as a social media and public relations instructor helps bring social scientist views and angles to the grant, and she explains how she helps to communicate how the center and other faculty members have helped spread NOAA’s messages and goals.

    In a bonus episode, podcast host Dr. Tia C. M. Tyree speaks with guest Dr. Rosa Fitzgerald who is the center’s lead investigator from the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP). She’s a Professor in Physics with research interests in air quality, aerosol research, atmospheric optics, radiative transfer and remote sensing. As a member of the center since its initial funding from NOAA, she reflects on her longtime commitment to the center, students and research.  

2021 Fellows Series

The first five episodes are a part of a student-led series called “2021 Fellows Series.” It helped listeners explore the educational and career opportunities available at NOAA through NCAS-M.

Hosted by Camryn Billett, a NCAS-M fellow from Howard University, these episodes feature unique stories from five students in the NCAS-M program.
